After the establishment of the Sugar Beet Seed Institute in 1953 as an independent institute responsible for the supply of sugar beet seeds and agricultural affairs, sugar beet seed production began in the Eqlid region in Fars province as one of the four main stations. Since 1964, the research activities of the Sugar Beet Seed Department have been established based on the goals and policy of the Sugar Beet Seed Institute.
So far, this department has made valuable achievements in the field of improvement of high-potential cultivars with appropriate quantitative and qualitative yield, agronomic problems, and production of cultivars resistant to rhizomania disease in sugar beet. Currently, the main activities of the Sugar Beet Seed Department are the preparation of resistant single-cross hybrids, the identification of the O-type genotypes resistant to rhizomania, the evaluation of the tolerance of internal and external sugar beet cultivars to rhizomania disease, the preparation of rhizomania-resistant pollinator parents and preparation and evaluation of resistant hybrids.
